MOUNT FUJI · JAPAN

The cone, the pagoda, the lake at first light.

Summit climbs in the short summer window. The Five Lakes any season. Chureito Pagoda framed by sakura. Hakone onsen with Fuji in the window. And the day trips out of Tokyo that get you there.

Only at Mt Fuji

The shots no other mountain gives you.

Mountain views are everywhere. These three compositions are not. The summit-line sunrise from the only one of Japan’s Three Holy Mountains people actually climb. The pagoda-and-sakura framing that exists at one viewing platform on earth. The mirror reflection on Kawaguchiko that needs three weather conditions to align. Plan the trip around whichever one you came for.

From the 5th Station

Climb to the summit at sunrise

Mt Fuji is a single 3,776-metre cone with no surrounding peaks, so goraikō — sunrise from the summit — is unobstructed in every direction. Climbing season runs early July to early September. The 5th Station at 2,300m is where almost everyone starts, served by buses from Tokyo and Kawaguchiko. The Yoshida Trail does the round trip in 10–14 hours. One of Japan’s Three Holy Mountains; the only one travellers actually climb.

From Arakurayama

The pagoda, the cone, the sakura

Climb the 398 steps up Arakurayama Sengen Park and you arrive at the only viewpoint in the world that aligns a five-storey pagoda, full-bloom cherry blossoms, and Mt Fuji’s snowcapped cone in a single frame. The shot you’ve seen on every Japan travel poster. Mid-April is when all three elements are in alignment.

On the lake at dawn

Sakasa-Fuji on Lake Kawaguchiko

On a perfectly still morning, Fuji’s full cone reflects on Lake Kawaguchiko — the sakasa-fuji, or inverted Fuji. It needs no wind, no mist, and clear sky to come together. Photographers stay multiple nights for the shot. Taken from one specific lakeside spot off the northern shore.

From Tokyo, one day

If you’ve only got a day, this is it.

The Fuji day Tokyo is built around. Bullet train or coach out, scenic viewpoints, the lake stop and Hakone, last train back. The one travellers book first.

By place

Pick your viewpoint.

Each side of the mountain has its own view. Kawaguchiko for the lake mirror. Chureito for the pagoda framing. Hakone for the ropeway and the onsen. The 5th Station for the climb. Lake Yamanaka for the hot-spring stay. Tokyo for the day out.

By tour type

Or pick how you’ll get there.

Bullet train if you want speed. Private English-speaking driver if you want flexibility. Coach if you want the budget version. Customisable private if you’re building the day yourself. Photo tours, 5th-Station climbs, onsen stays and the rest.

Out of the capital

Tokyo to Fuji in a day.

The classic Fuji day starts from Shinjuku or Tokyo Station. Bullet train, express coach, or private vehicle out; lakes, the 5th Station, sometimes Hakone in the loop; last train home. Three day-trip picks we’d book first.

The slow side

A day spent on the lakes.

Fuji has Five Lakes spread around its northern base. Kawaguchiko has the ropeway and the cruise. Yamanaka has the hot springs. Oshino Hakkai has the spring-fed pools and the thatched roofs. Three slower-paced picks for travellers who’d rather sit by water than queue for a bus.

Hot-spring side of Fuji

Hakone, with Fuji in the window.

Hakone sits south of the cone. The ropeway crosses the volcanic Owakudani valley; Lake Ashi has the pirate-ship cruise; the onsen ryokan stays still beat anything Tokyo offers. Three picks for travellers who want Fuji in view from a soaking bath.
